FiveThirtyEight shaped my perspective on politics and polling. I started listening as a 21 year old, in an attempt to self-soothe about the doom of American politics. I listened religiously - I think every ep for the last 8 years! I came to the Austin, TX live show during the 2018 midterms, because you all came to my office at my first big girl job! And now, at 29, I still feel doom, but I’m a bit more informed about why I feel that way. Galen, I will miss your witty, increasingly unhinged cold opens and the 538 team. Excited to be here - your substack is why I got on the app!
FiveThirtyEight was such a a key part of me learning to understand politics and so much else and I remain so gutted for you and the staff. The previous hits and layoffs were so upsetting, but the idea that it was still there, even if not in its former form, meant so much and I'm still having a hard time believing it's gone. But I'm glad GD Politics exists and those photos were a wonderful look back at the site's run (and a bunch of moments I remember vividly, especially the Andrew Yang bathroom podcast). Who says your parasocial Internet friends aren't real? ❤️
I would have loved to hear FiveThirtyEight since the very beginning, I started watching in 2020 and became a fan during the pandemic. Glad to see how GDPolitics goes
I’ve lived in Taipei, Taiwan for the past 7 years - and I can’t thank you enough for keeping me connected to US politics in a meaningful way. When living the expat life, it’s always nice to have connections to life back home - and I’m glad this Substack gives me a new way to do that!
I am so overjoyed to discover a new way to listen to Galen! I have looked forward to the 538 politics podcast every week for years, largely because of Galen. He is so fair minded, funny and charming! I missed when the full videos stopped being posted on YouTube, and it is nice to see your lovely face again!
Thank you for the memories, Galen! I've been listening since the early days of Clare, and Jody, and Harry. With Nate as the wunderkind and you producing. I listened religiously and got to see you guys at Politicon in 2016. It certainly is the end of an era 🧡
Thanks for sharing. Missing all of you, particularly from the good old days before the first round of layoffs. You helped me get through COVID and Trump 1.
Good luck landing on your feet; I bet you will. What do the Scottish teens say about that, I wonder?
This was absolutely a wonderful reflection Galen. 538 will always be my favorite site ever, as a massive stats nerd who loved sports and was coming into political consciousness as a freshman in college in 2016, the website was perfect. I didn't miss a podcast or article for years and years. I never made it to a live show, but I did get to take a class on the Presidency with the great Julia Azari, which might be the next best thing.
I was looking forward to being at the 2020 DNC in Milwaukee, but we all know how that went. I don't remember when you became a podcast regular Galen but you did an incredible job. The year in review podcast you did with Chadwick Matlin after you fronted 538's fantastic 2022 coverage is one of my favorites. You and your whole team deserved much better for your groundbreaking work. I'm looking forward to see where you take it next. Never getting rid of my 538 t-shirt!
I read this and heard Galen's voice in my head. The end of the podcast at this time in our country feels sadly on brand. Hoping everyone lands on their feet and helps shape more independent media.
I really enjoyed your podcasts and all the 538 coverage. Excited to see what all of you do next. This generation of extremely talented and recently unemployed journalists, entertainers, and media professionals are going to be part of a radical renewal of our country and culture. Better days ahead, even if the tough times are not over yet.
Found my new favorite substack

Not a single mention of Perry Bacon. Wasn't he a regular on the 'pod for quite some time?

That was a fun read. It’s always interesting seeing behind the scenes. Stay positive Galen!

Sad I never could make it to a live show (kinda far from Boston). That list of top podcasts from 2016 is really something. Better times, for sure!
I was there at Sixth & I in 2016. I’d upload a photo of you all on stage if I could. Those early years of the pod were something special.

Really enjoyed this recap! Especially loved the pics and behind the scenes stories. Looking forward to whatever comes next for you.
